About the Author

Margery Wheeler Mattox was born in 1925 in Reading, Pennsylvania, and spent much of her youth in the beautiful valley that inspired this story. She is a renowned portrait artist who also paints landscapes in oil. She loves sketching, seweing, writing poetry, and landscaping, and has restored historic homes in Gettysburg, New Smithville, and Pine Grove, PA. In addition, she designed and built a beautiful house, surrounded by rock gardens, in Swopes Valley that served as her studio and sanctuary. Her love of nature and her proud Native American heritage has giver her a spiritual connection to the world around her. Margery resides in her beautiful home, Nutting Hall, in Pine Grove. The mansion, built in 1825, was placed on the National Historic Register of Historic Homes in 1980, after being lovingly restored to its original splendor by Margery’s hand.
